We bought our first house!

Christmas in our first home!

In December 2022 we were handed the keys to our new home. New to us of course, as the house was built in 1910.

It was an estate sale, and the home was sold “as is”, but we saw the massive potential it had despite its downfalls.

The walls were covered in a 1960s pink and beige heavily patterned wallpaper, that many people loved when they came in, but wasn’t going to work with my future design plans. The upstairs bedrooms had square (asbestos) tiles on the floors, as if they were strange office spaces. The orange shag carpet ran through both floors, and had definitely seen better days. But through it all we could see a home for our growing family. With our son in his baby carrier strapped to my husband’s chest, we met with our realtor out front after the tour and excitedly told him we wanted it.

He wisely said to sit on it overnight, and to really think about what we were getting ourselves into. This was a massive project and would be very testing to our patience, lives and relationship. But we only saw the potential of a big, beautiful three storey house with a massive double lot and a backyard orchard. We took another tour on Saturday and made an offer. After a little back and forth, it was OURS!

When we did get the keys, we jumped right into the process. We started cleaning and erasing the months of neglect, as the house had sat empty after its original owner has passed. The heat wasn’t working, there was evidence of rodents and pests throughout the house, the stove was missing a few key pieces… but we worked to make it a home.

We found so many fun items in drawers and cupboards

We know the house is going to be a long journey, but we’re so excited to discover and learn as we go. Because what is life without a bit of craziness?!
